Fight the gay marriage Constitutional Amendment!

As if this country can sink any lower into the depths of right-wing hysteria, President Bush is seeking an amendment to the most revered document in the U.S., the U.S. Constitution, in order to ban gay marriage. When has the Constitution been amdended in the past for example?

To abolish slavery.

To give women the right to vote.

Amendments are rare, momentous occasions that have taken place in U.S. history, and rather than focus on, oh, say the almost 3,000 men and women who have been killed in the quagmire of Iraq, or the corrupt oil industry, or the destruction of our last green places in the U.S., Bush and his cronies are more concerned about two people of the same sex wanting to share the same rights and equal treatment under the law as heterosexual couples do when married. What a concept.

I rarely (if ever) post personal stuff here to my LJ, just because I don't think people are all that interested in my shit. But in this case, I'm making an exception because I am fucking pissed off at the possibility of a war-mongering, racist, and blantantly homophobic future for our country. We're headed that route now, and it makes me embarassed to be an American.

I urge everyone who reads this to head over to the Human Rights Campaign website to fill out an online postcard.

You don't have to do anything other than type your name and e-mail in the little boxes to protest this outrage.

Agree or disagree with me, I don't mind. But I have a feeling a majority of people who are on my Flist think the same way I do.

God forbid this ever passes.

I was planning to call my senators when I got home from work tomorrow, but I'm now going to go fill out the postcard, too. Makes me sick that every time Bush needs to rally his core supporters and knock his screw-ups off the top of the news cycle that this is the issue he chooses. I've also been wondering about the timing of the vote, coming as it does on the heals of today's 25th Anniversary of the medical report of the first AIDs cases.
I have the feeling that smoke and mirrors trick may not be as effective a it used to be.
One can only hope.
And send postcards.

Like I've said, weapons of mass distraction.
I don't think it will pass, there's not enough support in the Senate, it's a distraction from Bush's real problems.
I agree. It's a total smokescreen. The only reason he's bleating about gay marriage all of a sudden is to try and distract everyone from the real issues, i.e. immigration, runaway spending and the war in Iraq. He really thinks we're all so stupid that we'll all just say "oh look! shiny!" and not see what he's really doing.

Funny every time he gets into trouble, he just beats the "gay gay gay" drum til he thinks the conservatives are lulled into a stupor. As far as the amendment passing, I don't think it has a chance in hell. But he knows that.
I agree with you a 100%.
Amen.
I've always found it kind of funny that ol' Dubbya's focus is on same-sex unions as opposed to issues like ... oh, I dunno ... our economy spiraling down the shitter, 1/3 of the American population bordering on the edge of poverty, our souring relationships with the other nations, etc. etc. Nope -- as our Prez sees it, abortions and gay people are what's reeeeaally bad.

DUDE. How this moron got elected a second time, I'll never understand *shakes head*
'How this moron got elected a second time, I'll never understand *shakes head*'

In total agreement with you. The first time we know how he was not-elected.
The second... I'm still wondering.

If I was a US citizen I would have sent the HRC postcard already.

This is scary. I know he won't succeed, but I think if he got this amendment, the next thing he would want was for gays to wear the pink triangle in their jackets, like in the concentration camps.
I agree it's disgusting. Over here in Australia we have the same problem with John Howard, he is a homophobic creep as well. All we can do is raise our voices and hope that they are eventually heard. It's scary to think that there is still so much ignorance and homophobia around in the 21st century. :-(
Don't be embarrassed. The Americans I know are not like that. But who in hell keeps voting for B*sh???? That's what I want to know!

BTW, I think the gay marriage thing is a crude attempt to deflect attention from the real problems and garner a few conservative votes.
