Brokeback Mountain on Friday?

I work in the heart of Chelsea, one of the major gay sections of New York City. It's a nice part of the City (and I've mentioned before the bonus of walking to get my lunch on a warm summer day and watching the boys come out of the gyms with no shirts, heh) and this Friday the Clearview Chelsea Cinema is showing Brokeback Mountain. Despite working in Manhattan, I've never taken advantage of going to see movies that have limited distribution, like Brokeback. And even better, I can let my Flist know what I thought Friday night when I get home.

The theatre is a short walk from my job, and one of my co-workers wants to go see a 12:45 p.m. show. But I took off yesterday, so I may just have to go to the 5 p.m. show after work instead. That means I'll have to figure out what time the movie gets out and how long it will take me to get back to Port Authority so I can decide what bus to catch. It's a pain in the ass, because the last bus that goes to my stop is 7:40. Hmm, maybe I can sneak out early and catch the 4 p.m. show.

I'm determined, though. I can't wait to see it.

I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time, trying not to get too excited, but with each glowing review I read and each picture downloaded I'm already in love with the movie. Unfortunately I live in an area that may not get it; so, I'm relying on my friends to give me reports after viewing it. I hope you get to see it and I hope you enjoy it. From what I've heard about it it's one of those movies that just glows with truth and the big screen is where I'd love to see it.

Y'know, it's weird that I can't wait to see this film, because I've seen so many other gay and lesbian films over the years it shouldn't really matter. But I guess since I've read the short story and know how it ends I'm looking forward to seeing what Ang Lee makes of it, and of course with two big Hollywood stars it's going to make an impact. From what I read Lee didn't hold back on the sex scenes, either; that will be interesting -- to see how honest he is about making this film and not shying away from its subject matter.

In my LJ I linked to an article written by a gay critic and he says the actual sex scenes amount to about a minute in the movie and for straight guys it's going to be the longest minute of their lives, but they're just going to have to get over it because it's not about the sex, it's about the love and apparently Ang Lee really does show the love as well as the sex and is unapologetic about it and very honest. It's just such a sad story, but I think it reflects a lot of what's happening now.

Oh man rhymey, I should just take the next flight to the Big Apple and join you on Friday! We´ll be getting the movie in January, but I can´t be sure to watch it either (like Deb) because, well you know what my job is *sigh*. So watch it, write one of your famous reviews and post it, pleeeeaaase!

Yay, come see it with me!! You could fly in for the weekend ;-) I guess I'll have to take a notebook with me to write stuff down, huh? I'll just have to figure out what time I can get over there and still catch a bus home! I'll have to see how my boss is that Friday, and maybe I can sneak out early.

I'm so jealous. I live in one of those areas that might never get it. I asked at the theater last week and they didn't know. They've only been playing the trailer for it for months; how can they not know.(Insert eyeroll here.)

Isn't it frustrating. I will be shocked speechless if they are showing it at my local theater. The only other possibility is to drive over an hour to a larger town, but I have my doubts about it too. Maybe it will do really well and open wider the following weekend. I haven't even seen the trailer, just some still shots on line.

Well, actually, I live in an area that would never get it either, as I'm 70 miles from New York City. That's why I feel the need to stay late and go see it, because I know if I don't I'll have to wait for the DVD.
