Last week's birthday weekend photos

I get home too late at night during the week to spend time uploading photos, so I have to do it on the weekends. Here are the photos from my birthday weekend last week, where my girlfriend and I went to Rockefeller Plaza in New York City to see the tree. We also went to the Top of the Rock, which is the observation deck at the top of the building.

But before I get to that, I thought I'd show you the Oz-inspired birthday present she gave me, a silver dogtag inscribed with the immortal words of Tobias Beecher on it.

I had a hell of a time taking the photo where it wouldn't reflect right back into the camera.

Now, on to the New York City photos!

Here are a few shots of the window display at Saks Fifth Avenue, which is across the street.

And here's the light display on the Saks building, set in time to music. I couldn't get back any farther to get the whole building, and an MTA bus comes barreling through at one point, but you get the idea.

Way up there is Top of the Rock

On a clear day you can see forever...or into New Jersey, anyway. Taking photos at night is no easy task, especially when it's 20 degrees at the top of the building. You gave to hold really still to try to prevent the photos from being blurry. These were the best I could do.

The bright lights down below there are Times Square.

And here's the Empire State Building.

Love the dog tag!

Shiny!!!Sparkly lights!!! Wheeeeeeeeee!!!
Shiny! Sparkly!
What fantastic photos! Now, if you'll just tell me what the story was in the windows (either the L&T or...I think it's Macy's window's always tell a short, simple story), I won't have to brave the cold to go there this year! *g* You even got me the light show!

And Rhyme...that dog tag is so wonderful, on so many levels. I'm really happy for you.
The window was something having to do with "differences make us special" or something to that effect. But they didn't have that much of a story. Still, pretty!

Thanks for the nice comments!
Love the dog tag...it's gorgeous...

And nothing beats New York at Christmastime... the lights/music at Lord and Taylor are beautiful...

The shots from Top of the Rock came out great...all the lights....*sigh*

Makes me *so* want to go there...it's been way too long...
Come visit! I wanted to see all the other windows too, but it was way too cold to trek over there. Glad you liked the lights. :-)
the tag could start a trend--loved seeing the christmas lights in New York--they looked fantastic
It would be cool if it did start a trend! Thanks for the nice comments.
The tag is wonderful, in so many ways.
Thanks for the great photos. They made me feel almost there, minus the cold.
Thanks! And believe me, it's a good thing you missed the cold. It was windy at the top of the building.
Awesome gift you got there. I'm so happy for you.

The pictures make me want to go back so bad! I just loved the shots. Thank you so much for sharing them!
Thanks; she knows how to pick good gifts. ;-)

C'mon back! NYC in winter is so much better than any other time of the year.
Oh, the dog tag is beautiful. I really love that.

And the photos are great! LOOK HOW BIG THAT TREE IS!!
I need to get a longer chain for the tag. I worry I might get it caught in my clothes and have it break or something.

THAT TREE WAS REALLY BIG. It's nice to look at, but I have to say, I'd rather see it still living and in the ground somewhere.
So pretty! *sigh* We were considering going to NY for Christmas, but we factored in airline tickets, and it was just too expensive. We're going to San Francisco instead, and it'll be cheaper on our wallets.
Yeah, travel is really expensive, and when you add in hotel costs, it's almost impossible to come to NYC for any length of time.

Have a good time in San Francisco -- I didn't like it very much, but maybe you will.
Fabulous pictures! I love them all, but that vid was
so
'New York' with the bus plowing through. Thanks so much for putting these up.

And I love your dog tag. I hope the two of you are very happy.
LOL, what would have been even more New York is if you heard me cursing the damn bus as it drove through my lovely shot!

And I love your dog tag. I hope the two of you are very happy.

My family doesn't exchange gifts anymore, so this is the first time in years I've had to actually buy something for someone! It was a little stressful, LOL.
Thank you for all of the beautiful, festive pictures! Your birthday present is beautiful.
Thanks, I love taking photos and sharing them with my Flist. Who esle is going to look at them?

Your birthday present is beautiful.

Thanks!
Oh, it's all so beautiful and Christmas-y! I love it. Thank you for sharing the photos.

And what a cool gift!
It was beautiful and Christmas-y and COLD that night. I didn't mind so much, but my GF is like a gecko or something and has cold blood, LOL. I told her she needs a heat rock to lie on, *snerk*.
LOL! Maybe she could make like football players and carry around those heat packs in her mittens and such.
Wow, what beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing with us!
You're welcome! :-)
thanks so much for sharing these pics! If it takes until I'm 70, I'm going to get to NY! And that is an amazing gift - how cool!
You better start saving now, LOL. It's the hotels that cost the most around here and can really drain your wallet.
You are one awesome photographer! You really have a great eye.

And your girlfriend has good taste - both in choosing you and for getting that lovely sentiment on the tag. I know you'll wear it proudly.

Oh, pssssh, go on. It's all the camera, really.

Awwwwww! I'll tell her you said so. :-)
Ooh, pretty! Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome! :-)
Lovely pictures and the video is great. What a lovely way to celebrate your birthday!
Your pictures ar so beautiful. I love the color contrasts - the night is so dark and the lights just "pop". Thank you for putting these up as I'm not going to get to SF to see any of the good windows. Although since we don't have any F.A.O. Schwartz anymore how good can they be? It would take days to get "Welcome to our world of toy..." out of my head.

P.S. Your girlfriend really knew the perfect present for you and you photographed it beautifully.
Thanks, sweetie! I hope you have a great holiday, too, in case you're busy and we don't hear from you. Keep up the good fight! I think about you often, so I hope you're doing well and staying strong. *hugs*
Sweetie, this is more in the vein of "act first, beg forgiveness later." I'm stealing your photo of your dogtag and plan to incorporate it into the art for a Valentine's Day card. Assuming I can get my stiff fingers and graphics software to behave. So I'm sort of asking for permission. If you object to the idea, let me know. But don't delay too long or I'll have the darn thing designed and sent off to the photo center. And I do have your snail mail address, don't I?
