This post has adult content. Because I'm an adult. Oh, and my icon is dirty too. So there.
Well, it had to come to this eventually, I suppose. Now LJ users have the option of flagging other people's posts "as Explicit Adult, Offensive Content, Hate Speech, Illegal Activity, or Nude Images of Minors."
Oh, this is bad my friends.
After being flagged it gets sent to LJ's Abuse Prevention Team, which will decide if the flagged content is indeed naughty. Who determines what is explicit? This so-called "Abuse Prevention Team"? Are you kidding?
What's considered "offensive"? My views? My opinions? My icon? My interests? My language? Did you know they can say "fuck" on terrestrial British television, unlike in the United States? What exactly is "explicit adult"? A painting of a classic nude? Or a screencap from a porno movie? Did you know that in Europe nudity is no big deal?
If you were a homophobe and came to my journal, you'd be flagging me all over the place. ( Note from Rhyme: All love is love!)
If you thought that the TV series Oz was nothing more than exploitative violence and homosexual trysts, and then heard me talk about it, you'd be flagging me too. ( Note from Rhyme: There weren't enough trysts in my opinion)
My interests are varied and unique, and thus I tend to talk about all different kinds of topics here. My user info already has a disclaimer explaining that I am an adult, which means I will talk about WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANT. If you find that offensive, GO AWAY! Jeez. I'm not forcing you to read stories about gay sex, fer crying out loud. If you're a kid and you find this blog, don't read stuff that's not appropriate for you. Parents, take responsibilty for your child's net surfing.
When I get off my lazy ass and post stories again, you will find them to be labeled based on the Motion Picture Association of America system, e.g. G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17. I will not label my stories with the LJ "adult content" flag or whatever it is. I will not mark this blog as having "adult concepts" or "explicit adult content." It's patently unenforceable, ill-conceived, and simply wrong.
Right now LJ is filtering "explicit adult and offensive content" as default on our journals (which, interestingly enough, I didn't see mentioned anywhere). If anyone on your Flist labels their posts as such, you won't be able to see it. Make sure you go into Journal > Settings > Adult Content Options to change it.
I pay for this blog. In fact, this account is paid through 2009. I don't want LiveJournal to become some sort of Nazi state.
SixApart, I'll give you money for the privilege of posting here, and in exchange, please assume that I am not out to corrupt minors with "adult content" on this blog. Please consider me an intelligent and responsible paying customer who understands the notion of my right to free speech, within reason. I don't plan on inciting violence based on hate speech or yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater any time soon.
Just let me do my thing. Leave me, my blog, and my opinions the fuck alone.

angry
But yeah. This is un-good.
I'M FLAGGING YOU! *FLAGS*
EXACTLY. WTF?
If you were a homophobe and came to my journal, you'd be flagging me all over the place.
WORD.
Right now LJ is filtering "explicit adult and offensive content" as default on our journals (which, interestingly enough, I didn't see mentioned anywhere).
I wondered about the default setting...funny how they fail to mention that. It's amazing, how *happy* and joyful they sound in the new update post. Wheeee, let's censor! YAY.
SixApart, I'll give you money for the privilege of posting here, and in exchange, please assume that I am not out to corrupt minors with "adult content" on this blog.
Or conversely, say you ARE out to corrupt, who cares? You pay for it. And REALLY, how more corrupt can minors today GET? I mean, SRSLY.
I pay for this blog.
GOOD POINT! I DO TOO, damn it. FUCK off, censors. OMG, I said 'FUCK'. And OMG, my icon is offensive on SO MANY LEVELS, damn me straight to hell!
One of the HP comms got trolled a couple nights ago with some pretty serious homophobic/nazi/hate rhetoric, which was reported to LJ, too.
On the other hand, you do have a point. And, the HP fandoms have been targeted by LJ, before with pretty bad results.
I am not saying LJ is right- Those nazi fuckwits that trolled
I'd planned on bringing my LJ account to 'paid' status this weekend, as I am SO envious of the wonderful features displayed on some of the journals on my Flist. I may still do so, but you can bet Uncle Roy's freshly spanked ass that a query about censorship will be sent to our hosts as well. If our LJ Community will be subjected to 'flagging' by any Troll with a hair up their ass, the powers to be should damn well post a notice on our journals. This is all so unfucking believable.
And I agree with everything you said.
And, while I do think it's an overall bad idea that smacks of 1984-ism, I probably will be making my journal the medium-level (whatever it's called), because, looking at my journal objectively, it really isn't appropriate for 14-year-olds to be reading. Not because of the sex--I know tons of people who read and wrote explicit slash at 14--but because of just overall concepts, ranging from the emotional abuse I post about sometimes, to mental health concepts that I think you might or might not be able to grasp at that age, to sexual issues that I feel need to be learned from someone other than me (for example, I may talk about sexuality openly on my journal, but if I was teaching someone about it, I would not go about it in the same way).
So, overall, I think the rate-your-own-journal thing is a good idea, ruined only by the flagging issue. Because, really, knowing from past experience that LJ doesn't understand "objective"...how the hell are they going to decide what is and is not ok?
*really wishes she had
I changed my settings. Thank you for that information. It was driving me nuts having to click on I am over 14 to read what people had written and some of the strangest things were flagged as adult content.
