This and that: Geeky Hero, Cap'n Jack, Wine, and Daisies
For you David Hewlett completists, there's a TV movie from 2001 starring Mark Harmon coming to DVD next week called Ann Rule's And Never Let Her Go that he turns up in. Might want to add it to your Netflix queues. He plays Mark Harmon's brother in the telefilm.
The BBC sent me three discs of the six-disc set to the third season of Doctor Who, which is coming to Region 1 on November 6. Disc 5 contains the three episodes Captain Jack appears in, and I admit to watching "Utopia" this afternoon (in work! I heart my job) just to see him. However, I stopped watching Who when Christopher Eccleston left, as I could never get into David Tennant (I think I'm the only one in the universe that liked Nine over Ten). That means I have no idea what is going on, only that I recognized the Hand In The Jar that got knocked to the floor on Torchwood. I didn't watch the rest of the three-part arc with "The Sound of Drums," and "Last of the Time Lords," because I have a feeling I need to catch up on Series 2 and the beginning of 3 of Who and might be ruined if I jump right into the three-parter.
From one of my favorite sites, BoingBoing, comes this interesting (and really long) New Yorker article about rich dudes who have too much money getting ripped off when they buy counterfeit wines. Frankly, if someone has so much money that they just want to have a whole goddamn cellar of wines they will never drink, they deserve to have someone pull a fast one. Maybe donate some of that wine money to people that need it, douchebag.
And for you Pushing Daisies fans (tonight at 8), you might like to try Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me, two other shows creator Bryan Fuller worked on that have the same ethereal feel. Both are fantastic and didn't last long. I hope Daisies is an exception to that rule.

Bwah! Thanks, you made my day!
Seriously, it's friggin' grape juice, people.
I like good wine as much as the next person, but... oenophiles are so damn irritating.
As opposed to Rhymephile, who is made of sometimes cheeseburgers and always awesome.
:)
Anyone who thinks they have a "nose" for wine is irritating. Gimme a break.

*snerk* Today I am made of shrimp and angel hair pasta ;-)
I guess I am made of spinach-bechamel croissant and mocha latte.
Yikes. Today I am made of trendy.
Tomorrow I will be made of jambalaya!

*dies of GUH*
Daisies seems to have a more deft touch at the surreal hermetic world of the PieHole, but it doesn't keep crossing between the two worlds in the same way, so it may be easier for people to get into. Which would be good in that not-cancelled sort of way.
I watched those three eps of DW and I hadn't seen any of the previous Ten or even Nine eps except those with brief Captain Jack clips up on You Tube, and they made perfect--okay 99%--sense to me, so I say don't deny yourself. I found Jack to be more restrained in this arc than in the clips I've seen of his time with Nine.
And I missed the first five minutes of Utopia--how does Jack get into the Tardis? How does the Doctor react to Jack following the hand? What does Jack say he's been doing all this time? If you can help me out, I'd appreciate it!
The Doctor rightly guesses that Jack found him using the hand, but doesn't seem surprised that he did so.
The "what does Jack say he's been doing all this time" is a touch more complicated. He goes into this long explanation of trying to find the Doc that I didn't quite understand, mainly because the last time I saw Jack he had been shot and revived during the Dalek invasion. So I can't help ya there ;-)
"Heroes," my new favorite show, is the new X-Files. It has a smartness to it that I miss from X-Files, involving the audience in the mystery but not showing them everything. Also, cute guys. :D
No, no you're not. I'm still enjoying Who, but I MUCH prefer Nine to Ten, and still tend to think 'damn, I wish we'd seen Eccleston play that scene' when we get a really good script.

Erm, not really. It might help if you watched the last couple of episodes of series 2 and possibly 'Human Nature' & 'Family of Blood' from series 3, because they will explain some of the small details, but other than that, you can pretty much work out what's going on and it won't spoil most of the other eps.
It's quite odd to suddenly see Torchwood all over my flist after almost a year lol! I'm looking forward to the new series in January, but PLEASE let them kill Gwen, PLEASE...the whiny cow!
At least we have James Marsters to look forward to, hopefully getting naked with Captain Jack! Gawd bless RTD, he knows and loves his fangirls (and boys) :)
PS David Hewlett AND Mark Harmon? ::thud::
Most of the reason I resisted watching Series 2 at all was because of Tennant. I know everyone loves him and voicing a different opinion is like sacrilege, but he's SO not Eccleston and he's kinda weird looking. His acting is a little over the top and not as fun as Eccleston. I do like Martha in the only one ep I've seen her in, but I still dislike Tennant's Doctor immensely.
Thanks for the tips on what eps to watch. Which are the pivotal ones that I need to know about when it comes to the season finale and events in Torchwood? I don't mind skipping all the other eps as long as I can see the ones that come into play in the three-part finale. I know Who historically has a lot of mythology that I know I'll never understand. But I want to know what to watch in case anything carries over to Torchwood as well.

Oh, I know, thank the TV Gods. Apparently there will be some snogging going on, which I can't wait to see! GUH.
'Human Nature & Family of Blood' explain what happens at the end of Utopia, and are actually very good eps, where Martha has something to do other than simper over the Doctor. 'The Lazarus Experiment' explains something that happens in 'Sound of Drums & Last of the Timelords'. Other than that, I don't think you really need to watch any others unless you want to see the eps at the end of series 2 where Rose leaves?
One episode I would recommend, that has almost no Doctor or Martha but is a stonking good episode is 'Blink'. Great writing and very creepy!
